K'hilat Ha'Aloneem Board of Directors met on January 14, 2013 at K'hilat. 

Present were Sheila Cohn, President, John Gottesman, Vice-President, Barbara Hirsch, Sandy Grotzky, Jeff Weinstein, Susan Kapadia, Phil Moncharsh and Finance Committee Representative Chris Drucker,

Minutes of November 26, 2012 Board meeting accepted.

Chris Drucker discussed the capital gains campaign to pay for the facility
improvement. A committee will be formed to facilitate ideas regarding how to best achieve the goal and a letter will be sent to all members and 'friends of" outlining the facility improvements that are in the process of being done (new roof, painting of exterior and possible interior, and air conditioning ). 

Programming Update: Barbara Hirsch reported that 22 people are attending the Kaballah class taught by Rabbi Michael Lotker and approximately one third in attendance are non members.

The Tu-B-Shvat Seder will be held on the January 27 at 6 p.m.

Age-ing to Sage-ing class taught by Pat and John Allen begins February 6.

Next Board meeting - Monday, February 18th, 2013 at K'hilat at 7:00 p.m.

K'hilat Ha'Aloneem

K'hilat Ha'aloneem Board of Directors met on February 19, 2013 at K'hilat.
Present were President Sheila Cohn, Secretary Margo Haas and Directors
Bob Birk, Sandy Grotzky, Barbara Hirsch, Phil Moncharsh and Jeff Weinstein.

Minutes of January 14, 2013 were approved.

Facilities report: Jeff Weinstein reported that the exterior painting and 
swamp cooler/air conditioning work has been completed .

Gardening and interior painting and clean up needed including the upstairs 
office/attic area. An inventory will be completed re work to be done.
Anyone with suggestions should contact Barbara Hirsch. A "mitzvah day' 
may be scheduled to do some cleanup (eg library and classroom
and classroom closet and upstairs).

Sale through Ebay; Phil Moncharsh will investigate further the possibility
of donation of goods being sold through Ebay with the revenue donated to K'hilat.

Capital Gains Contribution: Letters to be sent out week of February 19. 

Programming discussed: Tu B'Shvat Seder, Kaballah class and Ageing to Sage-ing have all been successful in regard to attendance and positive feedback. Other programming events discussed with agreement that three major events will be concentrated on as fund raising activities through July: Internet business (discussed above); Taft Garden picnic and . a theater party for Ojai Art Center's "Fiddler on the Roof" July. Anyone interested in being on one or more of the committees should contact a Board member.

Hebrew School and Children Programs: Sheila Cohn will try to find a teacher to conduct Hebrew lessons for the children as a "pre-B'nai Mitzvah training." Teacher and costs and day of week will be confirmed and then outreach to community to see if there is enough interest.

Rabbi Lotker will conduct a children's program for Purim on February 22.

Rabbi Lotker has suspended first Saturday of the month Torah Study. 

Passover Seder: Scheduled for March 27 at Soule Park and Rabbi Michael Lotker will officiate. Reservations required and can be done through website or mail.

Membership: Sheila Cohn will meet with Jerry Kaplan and Phil Moncharsh re membership drive ideas.

Tribute Cards: Barbara Hirsch has taken charge of the Tribute Cards project.

Next Board meeting is Monday, March 11, 2013 at 7 p.m. at K'hilat.

K'hilat Ha'aloneem Secretary

The K'hilat Board of Directors met at K'hilat on March 11, 2013. Present were President Sheila Cohn,Secretary Margo Haas and Directors Bob Birk, Barbara Hirsch, Susan Kapadia, Jeff Weinstein.

Minutes of K'hilat February 19, 2013 meeting were unanimously approved.

Three fund raising projects discussed and approved:

1. Ebay sales through Lee Cannady concentrating on “medium to high end” items with net profit to go to K'hilat.

2. Taft Garden tour and picnic organized by Ted and Pearl Malos on May 19.

3. Ojai Art Center Theater Party for Fiddler on the Roof" and Silent Auction July 13 .

Facility Repair - Photo of K'hilat remodel/repair will be in Ojai Valley News with acknowledgment of local contractors and referral to ojaitemple.org for fundraising opportunities. 

Programming - "Age-ing to Sage-ing" facilitated by members Pat and John Allen ongoing and receiving good response.  

Passover Seder scheduled for Wednesday, March 27. 

Hebrew Classes - Sheila has identified at least two potential Hebrew instructors. She will take the lead in organizing the classes with tentative start date in the Fall.

The K'hilat Ha'aloneem Board of Directors met on April 22, 2013 at K'hilat. President Sheila Cohn presided. Minutes were taken by Director Sandy Grotzky.

Finance Committee Chair Fred Rothenberg discuss proposed budget and dues structure. As a result of the recent exterior renovations including the new roof and painting we have an anticipated deficit however there was some cash raised during the fiscal year. Budget was approved and Motion made and approved that dues would be raised. Membership letter will go out including instructions re payment on line as an option.

Annual meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 22 at K'hilat.

Rabbi Michael Lotker's contract has been approved for 2013-14.

Upcoming events including Garden Tour were discussed.

Next K'hilat Board meeting is June 10, 2013 at 7 pm at K'hilat.

The Annual K'hilat Ha'Aloneem meeting was held on May 22, 2013 
at K'hilat Ha'Aloneem. Sheila Cohn, President, presided. Approximately15 people were present.

President Cohn provided an overview of the events held during the past year and confirmed that Rabbi Michael Lotker has renewed his contract for 2013-14. She further confirmed that the decision to not charge tickets for the 2013 High Holidays 
resulted in K'hilat receiving more money in donationst han it had in prior years with ticket sales. The Board will vote on whether or not to renew the policy at their next meeting.

The Board of Directors entering their second year term was introduced and Naida Cohn was introduced as the newest Board member. There are eleven Board members (maximum allowed per By-Laws) at the present time: President Sheila Cohn, Vice-President JohnGottesman, Treasurer Alan Greenberg, Secretary Margo
Haas and Directors Bob Birk, Naida Cohn, Sandy Grotzky, Barbara Hirsch, Susan Kapadia, Phil Moncharsh and Jeff Weinstein.

A programming report was provided by Margo Haas, Program Co-Chair with Barbara Hirsch. Plans are underway for 2013-14 programming to include eight Community Shabbat Learning Sessions with the Rabbi , two or more classes to be taught by Rabbi Lotker including a Kaballah Class, possible return of "Walking Stick" (Rabbis Gershon) for a Friday or Saturday night event, Tu'Bshvat and Pesach Seders, and a musical weekend. Additional programs are being considered. 

On July 13, Saturday, a "Fiddler on the Roof" theater party and silent auction will be held at the Ojai Art Center. This will be the second "Program With a Purpose" with the proceeds designated to go to the capital funding campaign.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a program or having programming suggestions should contact either Margo or Barbara.

A budget report was provided by Finance Committee Chairperson Fred Rothenberg who reported that at fiscal year end 2013 K'hilat budget is within budget projections and that next year it is anticipated that K'hilat will break even. K'hilat has gained five new member "units" in the last year and we are presently at 61 membership units.

Jerry Kaplan, member, proposed establishing a committee to address issues that he believes to be of ongoing interest to the community including but not limited to membership,rental of the facility to offset costs, amount of Hebrew vs. English used in the prayer service, whether the pew seating should be retained and continued use of the name K'hilat Ha'Aloneem vs. Jewish Community of the Oaks. Alan Greenberg recommended that the Board vote on whether the committee should be formed. This will be submitted to the Board at the next Board meeting.

Bob Birk, Director on the Board, provided a historical perspective in response to some of the issues raised by Jerry Kaplan and further provided some preliminary
thoughts based on his professional opinion re the pros and cons of facility rental and marketing of the name.

K'hilat Ha'Aloneem Board of Directors met on June 10, 2013 at K'hilat. Present were President Sheila Cohn, Secretary Margo Haas and Directors Bob Birk, Susan Kapadia and Naida Cohn. 

Susan Kapadia moved to approve Board Minutes ofApril 22, 2013. Naida Cohn second. Unanimous approval.

Report by Sheila Cohn that the decisionto change time of Friday Night Services to 6 p.m. has resulted in a favorable turn out and people have been going out to dinner together following Services.

Upcoming events are a pot luck on June 28 and a "deli night" on July 19 at K'hilat and a Shabbat Under the Stars (members home) scheduled for mid-August. 

"Fiddler on the Roof" Theater Party is scheduled for Saturday, July 13. Invitations have gone out with a deadline of July 3 to reserve tickets for reception, silent auction and performance. 

Gene Autry Museum in Los Angeles is hosting an exhibit of "Jewish Mosaic in Los Angeles" extending through mid- January and a "field trip" may be planned to visit.

Barbara Hirsch and Margo Haas will be meeting with Rabbi Lotker re offering at minimum two classes during 2013-2014.
  
Plans are pending regarding further renovation of the K'hilat facility.

Naida Cohn will research and present a plan to the Board regarding Yahrzeit reminders to members of the congregation.

A "Visions Committee" is in the process of being formed. Plans pending.

K'hilat Ha'Aloneem Board of Directors met on July 8, 2013 at the home of Sheila Cohn. Present were President Sheila Cohn, Secretary Margo Haas and Directors Bob Birk, Naida Cohn, Barbara Hirsch and Susan Kapadia.

Minutes of June 10 ,2013 meeting were approved.
Programming update given by Barbara Hirsch and Margo Haas: 

Rabbi Michael Lotker will teach three series of classes in 2013-2014 (three classes per series).

Tuesday nights - 9/17/13, 9/24, 10/1 - "The Garden of Eden and Other Biblical Stories of Temptation: What Really Happened and Why"

Wednesday nights - 1/8/14, 1/15, 1/22 - "Science and Religion: Conflicts, Confusion and Clarity"

Wednesday nights - 3/12/14, 3/19, 3/26 - "Children of Abraham: Comparing and Contrasting Judaism, Christianity and Islam"

Margo Haas gave an update regarding the FIDDLER ON THE ROOF Theater Party. We are close to 70 tickets sold and plans are in place for set up and the Silent Auction.


Other Programming and Classes:

Sheila Cohn will follow up regarding choosing a Hebrew language teacher. The language classes will be beginner Hebrew designed for adults and children.

General discussion regarding a Klezmer Concert as a fund raising
and community event.  

Report on "Creative/VisionCommittee":
Barbara Hirsch reported that "The Creative Committee" (aka "Vision Committee") has met. Present were Jerry Kaplan, Barbara Hirsch, David Cohn and Alan Greenberg. Another meeting is set and they will be reporting to the Board re their thoughts and recommendations.

High Holidays:

Margo Haas made a motion that there be no charge for tickets to High Holiday Services. Susan Kapadia second. Unanimous approval.

General discussion re preparation for High Holidays. A President's Letter will be sent to all members and "friends" with schedule and invitation to participate.

K'hilat Ha'Aloneem Board met on August 12, 2013 at K'hilat at 7 p.m. Present were President Sheila Cohn, Secretary Margo Haas, and Directors Naida Cohn, Sandy Grotzky, Barbara Hirsch and Phil Moncharsh. 

Motion to approve Minutes of July 8, 2013 meeting made by Phil Moncharsh. Naida Cohn second. Approved.

Margo Haas reported that the "Fiddler" Theater Party grossed $3,611.00 with a net profit of $2,238.00 and 71 attendees. The money raised will go toward the cost
of replacing the roof and exterior painting job already completed. 

Fundraising discussed. Discussion re "programs with a purpose" for replenishing funds used for facility improvements. Fundraising ideas were discussed including a Klezmer Band concert in January/February, 2014. Sheila Cohn volunteered to head the committee and an attempt to reach out to other members to be on the committee will be made.

Other fundraising ideas discussed were a spring garage sale, possible art fund raiser/raffle. Phil Moncharsh volunteered to follow up on ideas and recommended that the Board advertise that we are soliciting ideas for fundraisers and people to chair and/or be on the event committees.

High Holiday preparations discussed. A food drive will be part of the High Holidays and Naida Cohn will organize that. Sheila Cohn has received only one response so far to the request for participation which was part of the High Holiday mailing.

Hebrew teacher discussed. Sheila Cohn has identified a potential teacher for children only. The Board represented by Sheila will go back to Finance Committee for further consideration re payment. It was confirmed that a charge per student would be required and that there is some Jewish Federation of Ventura County grant money available for educational purposes.

Barbara Hirsch confirmed that the "Visions Committee" has met a few times and will provide a report to the Board at the October meeting.

Barbara Hirsch tendered her resignation as a Board member and the Board accepted her resignation with regret. She will continue to be
on the Finance Committee, "Visions Committee" and continue as Program co-chair.

Next Board meeting is second Monday of October, October 14. There is no planned Board meeting in September.

K'hilat Ha'Aloneem Board met on October 14, 2013 at K'hilat.


Present were Board Members Sheila Cohn, Susan Kapadia, Naida Cohn, Phil Moncharsh, Margo Haas, Bob Birk, Alan Greenberg. Also present were members of the Strategic planning Committee; Jerry Kaplan, David Cohn, Barbara Hirsch (and Alan Greenberg).  Guests were Fred and Ila Rothenberg.


Minutes of August 23, 2013 Board meeting were approved.

Sheila Cohn reported that High Holiday Services were well attended and well
received. The food drive for Help of Ojai orchestrated by Naida Cohn was a 
huge success. Naida suggested that we continue with some sort of outreach to
the general community and is discussing "needs" with Help of Ojai that K'hilat
can perhaps fulfill.

Sheila reported that she is working on plans for the Klezmer Concert. This will be another "event with a purpose" designed for fundraising and will most likely incorporate a pre-event dinner for those who are interested, along with a concert only admission option too.

Hebrew classes for children will taught by Raphaela Stoneman will begin October 21. For more information, contact Sheila at 805-640-8878. Classes are held at 5:30 p.m. for one hour on Monday evenings at K'hilat. 

The bulk of the meeting consisted of a review of what the Strategic Planning Committee has identified as issues concerning K'hilat : history, programming, future planning. A general discussion was held re how to "grow" the community to incorporate those both affiliated with K'hilat by way of membership and also those who are not. Discussion re dual purpose of a 'community shul' emphasizing religious services and education and a 'community center' which might include more secular/social activities. The Committee will continue to meet and come back to the Board in January with further recommendations. This is part of an ongoing process between the Committee and Board with the greater goal of reaching out to the community for further input and planning. 

The next Board meeting will be held on November 11, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at K'hilat.

Minutes of the Board Meeting of K'hilat Ha'Aloneem, November 11, 2013
Meeting held at K'hilat Ha'Aloneem.

Present: Sheila Cohn, President; Bob Birk, Susan Kapadia, and Naida Cohn

As there was not a quorum present, discussions took place without the formality of motions.  

Topics presented were:

* The need to nominate someone to fill an open position on our board

* The start of the Hebrew school with four children and the addition of one more this week

* The Hanukkah class to be taught by Rabbi Lotker on November 22 will start at 5pm. So far 8 children have signed up. There will be snacks included. Regular Friday night service will start at 6pm.

* The movie scheduled for December 7th Saturday, will be " "Change Begins Within." It features Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jerry Seinfeld, David Lynch, Donovan, Sheryl Crow & others. It is 95% music & 5% talking about The David Lynch Foundation / Transcendental Meditation.

* The Klezmer concert is currently scheduled for March 1st. Sheila and Susan will explore the possibility of a dinner before the concert.

* Our Passover seder is scheduled for April 16th. We will be looking for some help for set-up, shoppers for Pesach food, advertising, seating, and a phone committee.

* The Ojai Valley Winter Shelter runs from December 1st through March 31st.
K'hilat serves the first Monday of each month at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church 409 Topa Topa. The first night will be December 2. We serve approximately 25 to 30 guests each time. Financial contributions are appreciated since it takes about $500.00 to finance the program in addition to the food donated by members of the congregation. For more information,you can contact John Gottesman who is in charge of the program on behalf of K'hilat or send a check to K'hilat marked "Homeless Shelter."
