After Naida’s death last year, the Board agreed to establish the Naida Cohn Memorial Fund at the Jewish Community of Ojai. My children and I designated this fund as an appropriate destination for donations in Naida’s memory. Our goal was to commemorate and celebrate Naida’s life with support for an organization that she loved. We recently recommended to the Board that, as we approach the first anniversary of her death, the fund underwrite a special Shabbat service in Naida’s memory. The Board agreed, and the service will be held Friday, December 2 at our usual 6:00 PM time.
Rabbi Michael Lotker and Cantor Jay O’Brien will lead this very musical service. (You may remember Cantor O’Brien – then Student Cantor O’Brien – from last year’s celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary.) The service will introduce Mishkan T’filah – the Reform movement’s Shabbat prayer book — which the fund is purchasing. This book was the model for Miskan HaNefesh – the movement’s High Holy Day book that we use. The service will be followed by an extensive oneg to which everyone is invited. To assure that we have the proper amount of food, we’d very much appreciate a response to this email indicating whether you might attend. Please click here to send an email.
Finally, if you’d like to join JCO’s Naida Cohn Memorial Fund in underwriting the purchase of the new prayer books or if you want copies of your own, please let me know. The cost is $36 per book, and our order will go in soon. Just click on the "Donate" button to help us underwrite the cost of the books.
